Comebacks, sweeps, and Papi power

April 21, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Wow. Hi. I’m currently procrastinating writing a term paper, so let’s try to make this quick. I really have to finish this paper… 20% of my grade, yada yada yada, whatever.

Anyway, how ’bout them Sox? Sweeping away Texas thanks to David Ortiz pulling out of the slump, Pedroia and Ellsbury getting things started early every game, and Texas’s lack of ability to hold a lead or come from behind. Now, our Sox are ready to host the Angels, who they have systematically owned for the past three years. Beckett takes on Jeff Weaver (1-3, 3.60 ERA). Thanks to the addition of Torii Hunter and a red-hot Chone Figgins, this series probably won’t be a cakewalk like the last two ALCS these teams have met in, but it should be entertaining nontheless.

OH! Big news. I’m road tripping to Baltimore with 4 friends on the 13th and 14th to see the Sox kill the O’s. I’ll be sure to take pictures of Camden Yards and the Sox on the field, and hopefully we’ll see a couple good wins and lots of hits, runs, Ks, and homers by or boys in red and white (or… red and gray, on the road… yeah).

Until I’m not swamped with work I don’t care about, later.

Oh by the way

The Sox won the World Series.

Wasn’t sure if you heard.

<3 Rob.

P.S. I have a Patriots blog as well, www.BelichicksKids.wordpress.com. Expect a diehard love for Tom Brady, Ben Watson, Wes Welker, and Tedy Bruschi along with unapologetic hatred of the Jets, Dolphins, Colts, and Phil Simms.

If football isn’t your thing, see you when the Hot Stove heats up.

What makes this win so sweet

October 22, 2007 · 2 Comments

Y’know, other than the obvious.

A) Ryan Garko can shove it. Have fun drinking champagne by yourself in your hotel room tonight, buddy. And by champagne, I mean Natty Light, and by “by yourself” I mean with a couple of cheap hookers you found in the asshole of Quincy.

B) Uh, duh. Going to the big show.

C) Through the thick and thin I blogged the whole season and never gave up on the Sox. I had doubts, but I never relinquished my faith in them. Only once in Francona, and he deserved that (see the post here.)

D) FireDannyAinge and JIG, you guys made it worth it.

E) Oh oh, Boston, you’re my home.

F) I got to celebrate on the quad for about an hour before coming to write this. Jose Cuervo and I are good friends right now.

Finally, G) Friggin go Sox. World Series title or bust. Couldn’t you just feel it all year? From Beckett’s hell of a game in KC after the ugly loss at Schilling’s hands, followed by Daisuke’s first masterful outing, all the way through Beckett going 10-0 to start and the whole team pulling through even though Papi and Manny were having down years, straight through the tough stretch when the Yanks began to catchup and we were fighting them off for dear life until the end of the season, it was an adventure all around. And it’s not over yet. Only four more games to win, boys. Let’s do this.

LETS GO RED SOX!

Bottom 5th, 3-2 Sox

October 21, 2007 · 2 Comments

Daisuke FINALLY pulled the string and got Cabrera with a long-overdue change-up to escape further damage. Expect Okajima to come in if the Sox don’t put up a crooked number off Jake “I’m so friggin lucky” Westbrook.

Living to see Game 7

Seems quite possible now, doesn’t it?

Our boys are playing like the want it again, and how! I don’t want to, y’know, go out on a limb, but a 9 run lead is pretty solid. I’ll update later on tonight, but don’t expect anything coherent… I’m getting trashed tonight, friends, and I hope you all do the same.

Go Sox!

Keys to making it back to Boston

October 17, 2007 · Leave a Comment

1: Swing the bat. C.C. attacks the strike zone.

2: Play some defense.

3: Run the bases.

4: Don’t give up the huge inning.

It may seem basic, but those things are what have cost the Sox these past 3 games. I’ll be damned if we get swept out of Cleveland.

ALCS is coming, where have I been?

October 10, 2007 · Leave a Comment

That Angels series was quick. Almost like last year… hm. Interesting fact: That was Manny’s 1st walk-off homer as a Red Sox and first since 1996 with the Indians. Also, it may have been his first ever live interview. I now know what his voice sounds like… badass.

So, on to Cleveland we go. Or should I say, here they come. Am I worried about C.C., Carmona, or Jake Westbrook? In a nutshell, no, sort of, and no. I’ll explain.

As a team, the Sox are batting .192 against Sabathia this year, with Youk, Manny, and Lowell being the only ones to record hits. This was in one appearance at the Jake. Now he needs to come to the Fens and perform, where historically he has been shoddy. Last year in his only start at Fenway, Sabathia surrendered 10 hits to the Sox but allowed only one run. There’s no reason to doubt that the Sox can get that many hits and push across more runs this time around, especially considering how poorly he pitched last outing against the Yankees in Cleveland.

We all know the history with Carmona at Fenway; he sucks. He was strong at Jacobs field earlier in the year and had another great outing against the Yankees during the ALDS, but playing at home and on the road are two different things; just ask Julio Lugo. While Carmona seemingly got stronger as the year went on and had a better ERA on the road than at home, there’s reason to believe that being at Fenway can rattle his cage. If the Sox can get early hits and push across 1 or 2 in the first or second inning, hopefully they can get in his head and the crowd can keep him unfocused. Let’s be realistic though, Carmona vs. Schilling should be a 2-1 final score kind of game.

Jake Westbrook had the sinker working against the Yankees at first, but come on. He’s Jake Westbrook. This one’s practically over, assuming Daisuke remembers how to pitch effectively.

The X-factor – Paul Byrd. He’s never had good numbers against the Sox. He gives up a lot of hits and won’t be able to wiggle his way out of jams against a determined Sox team like he did against the Yankees.

Overall – Sox in 5. We have the pitching to shut them down and out hitters are getting hot at the right time; it’s time to clutch up, and they look primed to do so.
